Get Ready For Sailing Key West!

J/111s sailing Key West Race WeekCalling All J/70, J/80, J/105 & J/PHRF Teams!(Key West, FL)- The 25th Anniversary edition of Key West Race Week was by all accounts a great success and your Key West hosts are looking forward to building on the enthusiasm that was generated last year and delivering another memorable Key West Race Week 2013 for the one-design J/80 and J/105 classes, for the popular J/PHRF class and for the new J/70 class!  The competition is world-class and the evening socials at the Kelly’s Caribbean shoreside venue have proven to be very popular for skippers and crews.

For the 26th edition of this winter classic, ten races over five days are planned for J/One-Design classes and the J/PHRF classes.  A Key West hallmark has been strong class racing and we are hoping to grow those fleets that have supported Key West for years.  Positive news from all four J/Classes point to another year featuring great competition- so far 35 J's are signed up, about 42% of the 84 boats planning to participate already.  Come one, come all, let's make J's 50% of the fleet!  The more the merrier!

J/105s sailing Key West Race WeekFor J/105s, the big news is that one of the class's newest owners, Dennis Conner (recently honored as "America's Greatest Sailor" by US Sailing/ Sailing World Magazine) will be sailing USA 3- DC's PHOLLY, one of the oldest J/105s in existence.  DC just finished sailing the J/105 SoCal Championships and the J/105 North American Championships in San Diego and has proven to be a competitive J/105 sailor-- DC and crew are looking forward to sailing Key West and invite all J/105 sailors to join them for some "phun and phrolic with PHOLLY!"  To date, Damien Emery's champion ECLIPSE from New York has taken up the invitation as has Bennet Greenwald's PERSEVERANCE traveling cross-country like DC from San Diego, California!  What an opportunity to say you "crossed-tacks with DC (the America's Cup most famous sailor) and lived to tell the story"!  Join DC and crew for the J/105 2013 Midwinter Championship!

J/80s sailing off Key West - Race WeekThe J/80s have a quartet from Annapolis showing up with Kristen Beery, Bert Carp, Jeff Jordan's WILLY T and J-World's ANIMAL HOUSE looking forward to some rocking & rolling in the crystal blue-waters off Key West.  Joining them are Gary Panariello's COURAGEOUS from New York and Ron Buzil's VAYU 2 from Chicago, Illinois.  The J/80s will again be hosting their 2013 J/80 Midwinter Championship in conjunction with the Key West regatta-- it's a great way to have "your cake & eat it, too"!  Win class prizes, daily fleet prizes, door prizes and take a well-deserved break from the freezing grip of winter to work on that tan and catch up with sailing friends from around the world!

J/70 sailing fast- one-design sailboat class in NewportThe J/70s debuts at Key West 2013 for its first J/70 Midwinter Championship on a special circle just west of Sunset Key (Tank Island), past the NW Passage.  The racing promises to be fun, fast and challenging for what may be the first time many of the teams will be racing one-design. So far, with 18 boats registered and over 30 expected to participate the fleet is beginning to look like a "Woodstock" sailing festival with many legendary J/Sailors from the past participating as well as some of the latest rockstars. Known participants include Mark Ploch (winner of first J/24 Midwinters in 1978), David Ullman, Don Trask, Tim Healy, Rod/Jeff Johnstone, Heather Gregg-Earl, Don Finkle, Jimmie Allsopp & son Cole, Kerry Klingler/ Rick Lyall, Henry Brauer/ Will Welles, Mike Sudofsky, John Gottwald, Bruno Pasquinelli, Chris Snow and Blake Kimbrough, amongst many others.

J/122 sailing Key West Race WeekFinally, the J/PHRF Time-on-time handicap class is shaping up to be yet another great fleet of boats.  Last year, past winners Bill Sweetser on the J/109 RUSH and Robin Team on the J/122 TEAMWORK both said it was some of the best handicap racing they've ever sailed at Key West.  With Rod J handling the PHRF TOT handicaps, the racing was fair, fun and extremely competitive with the outcome of the entire week coming down to the last race.  This year promises to be just as much fun.  So far, two top J/109s are sailing, Sweetser's RUSH and Gary Wesiberg's HEAT WAVE; four J/111s are expected to sail including Doug Curtiss' WICKED 2.0 and class newcomer Bob Hese's LAKE EFFECT from Youngstown, NY.  Also sailing are Glenn Gault's J/120 REBECCA from Texas, Adam Esselman's J/124 STILL MESSIN from Michigan and David Alldian's J/95 CYMOPOLEIA from New Jersey.

REMINDER! NOTE TO SELF- be sure to enter NOW (no cost obligation) if you believe that you will be racing with us next January 2013 – here are the links to the online entry and the current entry list – it is easy to do and the entry fee is not due until later in December.  To enter Key Race Race Week, please click here   Sailing photo credits- Tim Wilkes

J/Fest Southwest Success!

J/70 one-design sailboat- sailing fast on Galveston Bay, Houston, TxJ/70s Debut, Enormous Showing for J/22s, J/24s(Houston, Texas)- Lakewood YC hosted the third annual J/Fest Southwest Regatta for sixty-two boats! Awesome atmosphere! Great band and free beer waiting for all the crews as they came off the water! Everyone is in party mode!

The focus of the J/Fest Southwest Regatta is to provide a Regatta venue that is extra fun for J/Boat owners, their family, and friends. While the racers are on the water, their spouses, children, family, and friends can enjoyed a myriad of activities and tourist attractions in the Bay Area.

J/24 fleet sailing one-design under spinnakerOne-design fleets that participated this year include the J/22s, J/24s, J/70s, J/80s, J/105s, J/109s and a J/PHRF class.  In the J/22s a great class of fourteen boats sailed with the local host team, BLACKBURN MARINE RACING skippered by Casey Lambert, simply walking off with the overall honors with four straight firsts for 4 pts.  Second was Fred Lindsey's team CACTUS JACK with a record of three 2nds and a 3rd for 9 pts.  Third was RICH SKANK sailed by Brant Koepke's team from Galveston Bay Cruising Association with three 3rds and a 2nd for 11 pts.

J/24 one-designs sailing downwind under spinnakerThe J/24s had an excellent showing with sixteen boats participating.  It was a knockdown, drag 'em out fight for the top three with Corey Harding's team on HAPPY DANCE taking the gold with a 1-3-2-2 record for 8 pts to win by one point.  Second was Bryan Dyer skippering RUMLINE from Fort Worth Boat Club with a 2-1-3-3 tally for 9 pts.  Third was Stu Lindlow on TROPICAL AGGRESSION with a 3-2-1-4 for 10 pts.  Great racing to the end for this trio of teams!

J/70 one-design speedster- sailing downwind in HoustonThe J/70s had their first one-design racing on Galveston Bay.  It was fun racing for all as the teams were all learning how to get the most out of their new boats.  In the finale, it was Bruce McDonald sailing ROGUE WARRIOR 2 from Houston YC that managed to score four 1sts and a 2nd for 6 pts.  Second was Jimmy Mitchell on BOOMTOWN from Fort Worth Boat Club that managed to wind a count-back tie-breaker based on most 1sts, etc.  Jimmy's 3-1-3-2-3 was good enough for 12 pts, overcoming Dave Hinrichsen's #51 that had three 2nds and two 3rds for 12 pts, too.

J/80 one-design sailboat- sailing Galveston Bay, Houston, TxThe J/80s had a great cross-section of sailors amongst the eight teams, including a team from Dillon, Colorado- Kurt Vanderwal on HENDRIX.  In some respects, this regatta was a great practice warm-up for local sailors all participating in the upcoming J/80 North Americans being held in Fort Worth Boat Club later in October.  Topping out the fleet was local J/80 champion sailor Jay Lutz sailed USA 803 with four straight 1sts!  Jay's performance was all the more remarkable considering the fact that they were up against another J/80 NA and World Champion, Terry Flynn and David Whelan, who ultimately finished second.  The Flynn/Whelan team sailed QUANTUM SAILS/ GULF COAST RACING to four 2nds to easily finish behind their local, friendly competitors.  Third was Alfred Poindexter sailing ANDALE that managed to just secure their position with a consistent 4-5-5-4 for 18 pts.

J/105 HORNY TOAD RACING TEAMAfter the Fort Worth Boat Club's One-Design weekend and racing seminar, it was clear the ten boat class was going to have some very competitive racing as many of the teams had stepped up their game and were sailing their boats much more effectively and faster around the race track.  In the end, local rock star Bill Zartler on SOLARIS again proved to be the "wiseman" of the class and managed to sail to four 1sts and a 5th for 9 pts, easily winning their class.  Behind them was Greg Turman's HORNY TOAD, a well-sailed team that featured some great local talent from the Houston area; their 4-2-4-2-2 record for 14 pts was good enough for 2nd place.  Bill Lakenmacher sailed his RADIANCE to a third place position overall with an 8-6-3-4-1 record for 22 pts, showing improvement every single race.

J/109 one-design racing cruising sailboat- sailing Galveston Bay, TxThe J/109s had one of their best showing in years with six boats sailing with one of the local host sailors simply dominating the fleet.  It was the HAMBURG "show" as Albrecht Goethe's teams led the fleet with five straight 1sts for a 5 pts total to win by a landslide.  Behind them was a real donnybrook of a fight for second place with Tom Sutton sailing his LEADING EDGE to a 2-3-4-2-5 record for 16 pts, to win a count-back tie-break based on 1-2-3 tally.  Losing that tie-break battle was Dave Christensen racing AIRBORNE into third place with a consistent 4-2-2-4-4 record also for 16 pts.

Finally, in the PHRF division, Doug Shaffer's beautiful J/122 GAMBLER sailed well as the "big boat" in the division to win with yet another "picket fence" performance- garnering four straight bullets for 4 pts to win class.  Second was Chris Alk's J/27 FOOTLOOSE with 11 pts.  Third was Bob Crutchfield's J/120 BLUECHIP with 18 pts.   For more J/Fest Southwest sailing information

J/70s Sailing in the Southwest!

J/70 one-design sailboat- sailing upwind(Houston, TX)-  New J/70 owner Dr. Bruce McDonald has this to say about his most recent experience on the water:  "Thanks to all of you who helped to bring about a fun weekend of fantastic sailing.  I can’t even vaguely remember any time in my 60+ year history of sailing when I have had so much fun and came in DFL.  Normally, such a finish would have me tucking my tail and slinking away.  I will need Dr. Crash or maybe Dr. Romberg to explain why I have such joy over something which should be so painful.  Such great talent to help me on my way. You guys are the best!!!

All I know is that I want to keep doing it as much as possible, with the possible exception of coming in last.  Maybe it will be less painful next time.  The paradox has at least brought clarity to the naming of the boat after a Greek goddess.   Thanks again, Bruce- J/70 #50, Dyspareunia"

Said local J/Boats Southwest dealer, Scott Spurlin, "Bruce was in a pack of well-sailed J/80's and Melges 24's.  The rating was 6 sec. faster then the J/80 and he finished boat for boat ahead of a few of them but lost on corrected time.  9 races.  All in wind conditions that the J/70 couldn't quite plane, but high enough to keep the J/80's moving fast downwind.

Bruce is a retired surgeon, long time sailor and took delivery of #50 last week.  He called me tonight as well.  Went on all about the attention he received, how the boat handled, what fun he had, etc. Totally addicted! He said that back at the club he was mobbed.  Couldn't get away, and was loving every minute of it!"  Nice to hear those kinds of stories every once in awhile!

J/70 Impressions from the Solent

(Lymington, England)-  We recently received a wonderful note from David Barrow from Lymington, England.  David for years has been part of Proctor Spars UK as one of their leaders in offshore keelboats.

David's commentary, "In 1979 I was given, by Westerly Yachts MD, David Saunders, the first ever J/24 to arrive in Europe and told to take it sailing at Lymington UK and see what it could do.  My brother Paul, a friend called Dougie Winton and David Allen Williams (a yacht designer), got the boat on a Saturday, and set about launching and rigging her.  We called her “Just the Job”--- as she proved to be!!

Sunday dawned a typical Solent day, 25 knots, wind against tide, misty, and not exactly bikini weather for the girls.  We rigged our new girl and reached off down the river to the Solent with no idea what to expect.  The Royal Lymington YC did not know what to do with this new boat, so they put us in Class 1 with boats up to 43 feet to race against.

We started upwind, in a fleet of 20 boats or so, with a beat of some 1 1/2 miles and we rounded mid-fleet.  Then there were about 5 reaches against the tide. The weather mark quickly receded as the boat really showed what it could do.  She lifted onto the plane and stayed there for about the next hour as we planed through the fleet and disappeared off to about a mile and a half lead at the leeward mark, ahead of the 43 footer.  Then there followed a 4ish mile beat to the finish, down tide and into the teeth of 25 knots, the 43 footer and a 40 ft flat out race boat got past us and we crossed the line 3rd overall.  We won on handicap by miles.  The J/24 was launched that day and the rest is history.

With the J/70 I think you have the next-generation sorted, and I wish we could repeat the exercise with the similar crew as we did those 33 years ago."  We agree.  And, hope that we can offer our support.  Nevertheless, do you think our "Lymington Mafia" pals "Fish" (Bob Fisher), Malcolm McKeag and others are up for another go 'round on the Solent with the old gang?  Please let us know!

(Annapolis, MD)-  On this Columbus Day weekend (October 4th- 8th), tens of thousands of sailors will make the pilgrimage to visit the US Sailboat Show in downtown Annapolis.  On display will be the latest racers and cruisers from the J/Boats high-performance stable.

Debuting for the first time in the Annapolis Sailboat Show will be the hot J/70 one-design speedster.  It's popularity in such a short span of time is quite remarkable considering the history of famous siblings like the International J/22 and J/24.  The development of a next-generation sportboat that combines the trademark attributes of performance and ease-of-control combined with ramp-launch capability (lifting bulb keel) has opened up entirely new sailing areas for many new J enthusiasts.  Learn more about the J/70 from those who've been sailing her on the Chesapeake Bay in one-design class racing.  For more J/70 sailboat information

J/80 one-design sailboat- women sailing on Solent, EnglandThe International J/80 continues to see strong class activity around the world.  The recent J/80 Worlds in Dartmouth, England saw over 70 sailing teams from 14 countries.  A record turn-out for ANY International One-design keelboat is expected in Marseilles, France for the 2013 J/80 Worlds on the Mediterranean-- over 135 boats are expected! The J/80 North Americans in Fort Worth, Texas are coming soon with several past World, North American and Key West Champions in attendance.  Learn more about why the J/80 has such strong appeal across a wide-spectrum of sailors in Asia, Europe and America.  For more J/80 sailboat information

J/95 cruiser day sailer- shoal draft performance sailboatTwo similarly-sized boats with remarkably different missions will be on display, each one appealing to broadly different sailors.  The J/95 shoal-performance daysailor and cruiser has proven time and again that it may represent the "ultimate in sailing freedom" for its passionate enthusiasts.  Drawing just 3.5 ft with keel/centerboard-up and equipped with twin rudders and wheel, J/95 is a snap to sail fast in some of the shallowest sailing areas in the world-- from the Chesapeake to Bahamas, Swiss Lakes to the UK's eastern coastline, New Jersey's Barnegat Bay to Florida's West Coast and Keys. J/97 family racer-cruiser sailboat- sailing in Newport, RIThe J/95s slightly larger sistership, the J/97 family cruiser-racer is a powerhouse in European offshore sailing circles, having won Cowes Week, Cork Week, Round Island Race and Spi Ouest in the recent past.  J/97's enormous, wide-open interior and enclosed aft-head are popular features for families wishing to combine solid offshore performance with casual weekend cruising.  For more J/97 sailboat information

J/111 one-design sailboat- sailing downwindFinally, what may be the most successful offshore 36 footer in the past decade or so, the J/111 offshore one-design speedster joins her fast and fun stablemates as the "queen" of this year's J high-performance sailing fleet.  This incredibly versatile, easy-to-sail boat has attracted a broad spectrum of sailors who've aspired to sailing a performance boat that doesn't break the bank, can be sailed by a family crew and is fast & fun to sail off-the-wind in 15-25 kt winds under full control sailing over 15 kts boat-speed.  Its massive 60" wheel and deep, high-aspect rudder provide finger-tip response in any condition.  J/111 provides, in short, the sports car combined with the family touring sedan-- high-performance handling combined with comfort and safety.  For more J/111 sailboat information

DIESEL Wins J/70s Hospice Cup

J/70 sailing off Annapolis, MarylandMIRAGE Nips 105s, AUNT JEAN Dusts 35s
(Annapolis, MD)- This past weekend's 31st Annual Hospice Cup in Annapolis - one of the country's oldest and longest-running charity regattas- saw a lot of boats come out and play, especially seven brand new J/70s in their first Chesapeake Bay one-design regatta!  While J/105s posted the biggest class, the J/70's were turning lots of heads as they worked the waves downwind. Those that came out found great breeze with 12-15 kt southerlies, big waves and not a cloud in the sky.

The Hospice Cup, an annual tradition of mixing sailboat racing and charity, has not always brought good sailing weather to Annapolis. But anyone who participated in this year's edition of the event on Saturday, September 22 has erased all bad weather from memory... What a day to be on the Bay! Great breeze, tight competition on the race course, fantastic food at the shoreside party, an auction, upbeat live music and all with the best views in Annapolis.

J/70s sailing one-design off Annapolis, MarylandHere's a brief synopsis of the event from proud new J/70 owner- Chris & Carolyn Groobey: "The charity regatta started with a four-leg windward-leeward race followed by a two-leg race with one long windward leg followed by a tight reach into the Severn River for a finish in front of the regatta’s spectator boats.  This was the first race for most of the participants, with some of the boats literally finishing their commissioning that morning.  Everyone enjoyed the 70’s upwind balance through the medium chop and worked on planing-versus-displacement decisions on the downwind legs.  Skippers reported speeds of 12+ knots on the downwind legs, crews reveled in the challenge of the tight reach back into the river and everyone wished the race committee had kept the fleet out longer.  Long-time J/sailor Tate Russack showed his experience with both J/performance designs and high-performance sportboats and posted a 1-1 scoreline to win the regatta.  The remainder of the fleet was tightly clumped, indicating a future of close racing for the fleet.

The Chesapeake fleet will soon swell to the low 20s with existing orders, with critical mass not only in Annapolis but also in Lewes (Delaware), Fishing Bay (Virginia) and the Hampton Roads area, and fleet leaders expect 40+ by early next year.

J/70s having fun downwind off AnnapolisThe Eastport Yacht Club in Annapolis will host a J/70-only regatta November 3-4 and hopes for 25-30 boats, comprised of both the local fleet and other 70s passing through Annapolis on their way to this winter’s southern circuit.  Annapolis will then welcome the 70s back at next spring’s NOOD regatta, where a 40+ boat fleet is shaping up to be a reasonable expectation.  All in all, a great start for the next great one-design fleet in the Chesapeake region."

J/35 Aunt Jean winning classMeanwhile, the J/105 fleet saw some spirited competition with Cedric Lewis' MIRAGE winning a cliff-hanger tie-breaker with Carl & Scott Gitchell's  TENACIOUS- the tie-break going to Cedric winning two races.  Third was Bob Reeves' A-TRAIN.  Fourth was Steve & Gregg Sunshine's HELIOS and fifth was Andrew Kennedy's BAT IV.

In the J/35 world, it was Jerry Christofel's famous AUNT JEAN (left)  that brought "home the bacon" by taking all three races in first place.  Second was Ken Karsten's BZING and third was Stephanie Reuer's DAKOTA GIRL (mostly by default).    Sailing photo credits- Dan Phelps at SPINSHEET  Please see Hospice Cup gallery- http://www.SpinSheet.com
