J/70 @ Moscow Boat Show!

J/70 one-design sailboat- sailing to Moscow, Russia! (Moscow, Russia)- With a successful launch of their J/70 program last year in Russia, the J/Russia dealer team of Grigory Aksenov and Dmitry Zaritckii have covered thousands of miles promoting the J/70 across Europe and Russia.  First sailing in the Y.C. Monaco’s Primo Cup in 2013, they returned again  in 2014 with two Russian teams for a weekend of great sailing and camaraderie with fellow J/70 sailors from across Europe.

This dynamic duo will again be presenting the J/70 at the Moscow Boat Show from March 11th to 16th and will likely take another “victory tour” around Moscow’s famous Kremlin Square, hopefully not in a blizzard like last year!  For an appointment or more information, please contact Grigory Aksenov at Kitira Ltd (http://www.kitira.ru), phone- +7-495-540-4529 or via email- aksenov.grigory@gmail.com  Sailing photo credits- YC Monaco/ Carlo Borlenghi.   For more Moscow Boat Show information

J/70 Sweden Boat of the Year!

J/70 Swedish Boat of the Year (Stockholm, Sweden)- The J/70 continues to garner accolades from knowledgeable sailors around the world.  In particular, Europe is seeing a significant uptick in one-design J/70 activity with more countries and more fleets developing across the Continent.

This past month the Swedish yachting press selected the J/70 as Sweden’s Boat of the Year, citing its scintillating performance, family-friendly boat-handling characteristics, easy transportability and extraordinary value relative to all other sportboats in the market today.

Here is J/Dealer Peter Johansson from Marstrand Yachts accepting the award at the boat show in Sweden. For reference, here’s the original article written in Swedish about the J/70’s qualities (translated into English).  For more J/70 sailboat information

J/70 Genoa Boat Show Report

J/70 Genoa Boat Show- Genoa, Italy"A Charming Little Princess"
(Genoa, Italy)- The J/70 was exhibited last week at the 2013 Boat show in Genoa. According to Paolo Boido, "The 23 footer won the interest of the public and the honor of being a winner on stage. J/Boats Italy showed up with two J/70's, one in the Stand and one ready for sea trials-- special thanks to Quantum Italy who supplied sails and assistance for the sea trials.

In five days we sailed fifty-seven times with all kind of sailors, most of them unknown and in all types of weather conditions; including the last two days when it blew up to 30-35 kts!  It didn't take long for us to record some nice reports from the enthusiastic J/70 sailors:

- a Genovese university professor of foreign languages wanted to go for a test sail. She was very embarrassed, admitting that she never gone sailing in her life!  But, when she saw the J?70, she decided to give it a try.  She was not properly dressed for sailing, soon she was totally wet in a cold afternoon with 25-27 kts of breeze.  Remarkably, she loved the experience and enjoyed sailing the J/70 so much we had a hard time convincing her to sail back!

- a business executive showed up for a test sail properly dressed for a day at the office with suit and tie!  When he got back to the dock, he showed us the new Velocitek he just bought in the show.  He explained that he turned it on at the beginning of test sail-- it showed an average speed downwind of 17.8 kts in winds of just 15-25 kts.  At first, he looked at the numbers in disbelief, thinking that he just bought a new instrument that was wrong and was planning to make a warranty claim and get a new one!  He showed it to the Velocitek guys, they tested it and said it was fine!  The man's jaw dropped in disbelief-- 17.8 kts average downwind!

- a Star Boat sailor friend of mine decided to take a test sail with his 11 yrs old daughter who's an active Optimist pram sailor.  The little girl, all of 60 lbs of her, was allowed to steer in 30+ kts breeze and she didn't want to give back the tiller to her Father!  In fact, she sailed very fast downwind under spinnaker!

The J/70 demonstrated once again the versatility of the boat for all ages groups and experiences-- it was a great show of power, stability, speed, safety, performance, and easy handling!  Thank you Alan and the J/Boats design team!  Amazing boat!"  Regards, Paolo.  For more J/70 one-design speedster sailing information

Australian J/70s On Show

J70 women sailing off Newport(Sydney, Australia)-  Since the J/70's arrival in Australia, interest continues to increase in the dynamic little speedster that has been taking the world by storm since its introduction in America in the spring of 2012.  With record turnouts in American winter/ spring regattas and building fleets in Europe, the world of sailing in the Asia-Pac world is just beginning to get its taste of the J/70 magic.

From May 23 to 26, the J/70 will be debuting at the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show, its first big show and first “Australian International” show since its arrival.  For those passionate J sailing enthusiasts in Australia, this is a great opportunity to enjoy a classic "fall boat show" Down Under and learn more about why the J/70 will soon be the world's next giant international one-design class!  After all, when club sailors were having a ball sailing their J/70s in 20-30 kt breezes (with no boat breakages) recently in the Charleston Race Week regatta, many sailing "other sportsboats" were doing cart-wheels across the water with massive breakages and capsizes taking place everywhere (rigs blowing-off boats and crews seen standing on keels in just 20 kts of breeze!).  Learn more about the fun, family-friendly, one-design speedster- the world's most popular new sportsboat- J/70!

J/70 Red Square & Moscow Boat Show Tour!

J/70 sailing into Moscow's Red Square(Moscow, Russia)-  Grigory & Dmitry of J/Russia where not only working hard selling both the J/70 and various J's at the Moscow Boat Show recently, they were also having fun playing "tourist" on the way home from the show.  And, so they decided to take a "side trip" with their J/70 around Moscow's RED SQUARE!

Imagine.  Red Square remains, as it has been for centuries, the heart and soul of Russia. Few places in the world bear the weight of history to the extent that Moscow's central square does. Inextricably linked to all the most important historical and political events in Russia since the 13th century, the J/70 in Moscow's Red Square- Kremlin in the backgroundKremlin (built between the 14th and 17th centuries by outstanding Russian and foreign architects) was the residence of the Great Prince and also a religious centre. At the foot of its ramparts, on Red Square, is the 16th Century St Basil's Basilica, one of the most beautiful Russian Orthodox monuments and most famous pieces of architecture in the world.  Then, across the square is the constructivist pyramid of Lenin's Mausoleum, leader of the famous Communist Party in Russia (then known as the Soviet Union or CCCP). Red Square is rich in symbols of Russia's turbulent and intriguing past.  If you want to learn more about Moscow- read more here- http://www.moscow.info/ or on Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Square.

Moscow's Red SquareThe photos of the J/70 are taken in front of the Kremlin and Saint Basil's Cathedral.  Yes, a J/70 actually went around Red Square without getting arrested, impounded or destroyed!  In fact, it was attracting a crowd!  Here's the photo journey of the J/70 MOJO in front of some famous landmarks before heading from Moscow back to Kaliningrad on the Baltic.  Very, very cool stuff. On the right is what it looks like on a sunny day!

We also believe the J/70 is the first SAILBOAT that has ever traveled around Moscow's Red Square in front of all those famous monuments, the Kremlin and all those other historical elements of Russian history.  Next time Grigory & Dmitry, put up the mast, hoist the sails and spinnaker and go sailing around Red Square on the trailer!

Scandinavian Sailboat Shows Starring- J/70!

J/70 sailing Marstrand, Sweden(Marstrand, Sweden)- Like a shooting star whistling across the Northern Lights on a crystal clear, deep black night in the Arctic Circle (where you can see stars across the horizon nearly 180 degrees!), the J/70 has stirred tremendous passion amongst the sailing cognoscenti in Scandinavia.

Recently, Peter Johansson from Marstrand Yachts in Sweden reported that "our first three J/70’s just arrived, we launched one boat and test sailed yesterday in -4 degrees Celsius. This coming weekend we have eighteen people booked for test sailings in the freezing winter weather. There is a lot of action right now around the J/70, many prospects coming in every week."  One of those "ice-pumping-in-their-veins" Vikings happened to be Peter Gustafsson who went for a spin with the famous offshore BLUR SAILING Team (blur.se), seen pictured here off gorgeous, sunny Marstrand!

For those sailors looking to get a taste of great food, amazing camaraderie and catching up with fellow sailors over some kirsch, cheese fondue and fine wine, you might consider taking a visit to one of the three up-coming Stockholm, Sweden archipelagosailboat shows in Scandinavia that features the J/70- Gothenburg, Stockholm, and Oslo.  Here are the dates for these events:
Gothenburg Sailboat Show- 2-10/February
Stockholm Sailboat Show- 2-10/March
Oslo International Sailboat Show- 13-17/March

J/70 European Yacht of the Year!

(Dusseldorf, Germany)- While on display at Dusseldorf, the world’s largest boat show, the J/70 was named "European Yacht of the Year- Special Category".  While several J’s have been previously nominated, the J/70 is the first winner.  On hand to accept the award was Didier Le Moal, President of J/Composites.

Here is Dieter Loibner’s report from boats.com: "Finally, the secrets are out- during "Flagship Night" following the opening day of the Düsseldorf Boat Show, the winners of the EYOTY contest got on stage. The "Who’s Who of the international boat business" gathered at the gala "Flagship Night", sponsored by the German publisher Delius-Klasing, to witness the awards of this year’s European Yacht of the Year contest.

JComposites President Didier Le MoalAfter thoroughly inspecting and testing the 25 nominated boats in Southampton, England and La Spezia, Italy the international expert jury returned the following winners:  "Special Yachts- J/70".  Nominated late as a substitute, the American-designed J/70 swayed the panel with a flawless showing during the last, and final, test days in Italy. Good acceleration, easy and precise on the helm, featuring a simple yet functional layout and a very effective sail plan, the J/70 will excite racing sailors and family crews alike. It’s the first J/Boat with a lifting keel, and it turned into a smashing success."

J70 sailing La Spezia, ItalySaid Jochen Rieker from Germany's YACHT Magazine, "For the tenth time, the international award of "European Yacht of the Year", is the annual contest that awards Europe's best new boats with the "Oscar of Water Sports".  The jury is made up of the test judges and chief editors of the eighteen leading sailing and powerboat magazines in Europe.  Every year in Europe there are nearly 100 new sailboats on the market but only five will earn the coveted title of "European Yacht of the Year 2013".

Yachting World (UK) editors had this to say, "Don't be surprised to see this one-design pocket-rocket to sell in the thousands. She sails as good as she looks, fast and fun, stiff as a board, and manageable but with more than a twinkling of J-style off-wind thrills. She represents good value, too, as I've no doubt she'll command a high resale price."

For those of you who missed seeing the remarkable BOOT Dusseldorf Show, please be sure to visit the two shows in The Netherlands-- BOOT HOLLAND or the famous HISWA Amsterdam Show.  BOOT HOLLAND runs from February 8-13 in Leeuwarden, see the J/70 on Stand# 5079 (http://www.bootholland.nl).  From Mar 6-10 is the HISWA Amsterdam Boat show- Amsterdam, Holland (http://www.hiswarai.nl/).  Please be sure to contact Robin or Angelique Verhoef at J/Benelux, hosts of the show, at Ph. +31-78-630-5505 or email- info@jboats.nl.

J/Boats @ Canadian Boat Shows

Toronto Boat Show- Jan 11-20
Pat Sturgeon from PSYachts in Toronto, Ontario will be hosting an enthusiastic group of sailors who are expressing tremendous interest in getting their J/70 fleet going on Lake Ontario-- in particular in Toronto at Royal Canadian YC and points east and west and in the lakes.  Pat's team will be available to chat about all things J/70 as well as how the J/111 and other boats are developing in the Great Lakes.  Please be sure to contact Pat Sturgeon at ph# 905-278-5100 or pats@patsturgeonyachts.com.

Vancouver Boat Show- Feb 7-11
On display will be J/70 #58, the first boat into the Pacific western parts in Canada in Vancouver, British Columbia.  Oh! Canada! Amazing to see Far Eastern Canada starting to grow with J/70s.  Even cooler to see the strong interest in J/70s in Way West Canada.  Those Canadian sailors predisposed to having fun and including all their friends in the festivities won't be disappointed.  While this is an indoor show, it won't be surprising to see this J/70 sailing in the warm, friendly waters of the Sound soon afterwards!  Be sure to contact Ian Fraser at ph# 604-734-3344 or ian@fraseryachtsales.com.

Halifax Boat Show- Feb 21-24
The Nova Scotians are nothing if not hardy sailors.  Renown for fishing offshore in "perfect storms" and bringing home the cod (not bacon!) to satisfy hungry appetites at home, their sailors are no different.  Witness the first J/111 video in cool fall conditions in 2010-- great video, eh??  Damn the torpedoes.  J/70 enthusiasm is stirring similar passion amongst the Halifax cognoscenti of all things different, cool, fun and fast!  Get a chance to see the J/70 and take her for an elegant spin amongst the whales, porpoise and icebergs as your first demo sail! Contact Jim Snair at ph# 902-275-2424 or syb@eastlink.ca.

Victoria Boat Show- Apr 18-21
For Western Canadians, if the February Vancouver show was a bit "chill", despite the warm, fuzzy, cottage-like atmosphere, then the Vic show will be a refreshing alternative.  With all snow melted on Blackcomb/ Whistler, with ski legs all in shape, now's the time to sport some shorts, toss some Molson Lites into the cooler and demand that J/70 #58 be taken out for demo sails from inside the main tent.  Of course, you can have that discussion with Ian Fraser at ph# 604-734-3344 or ian@fraseryachtsales.com.  Make arrangements with them soon!
